X MARKS THE SPOT: BC Tesla driver unwittingly leads police to his doorstep after alleged hit and run

A Burnaby Tesla driver made it all too easy for police to track him down after an alleged hit and run, leaving behind not only vehicle debris but also a visible trail of fluid leading straight to his location.

The incident occurred on February 10, around 11:30 p.m. when Burnaby RCMP responded to a report of a collision at McKee St. and McGregor Ave.

Witnesses reported a vehicle striking two parked cars before fleeing the scene without stopping.

At the crash site, officers found a piece of the suspect vehicle’s fender with the marking "Model X" on it. Adding to the evidence, a noticeable trail of fluid extended from the scene, leading officers on a direct path through an alley and right onto a residential property.

Upon arrival, police located the damaged Tesla Model X and confirmed the owner's safety before arresting him for failing to remain at the scene of a collision. Authorities seized the vehicle, including footage from its onboard camera system, as part of the investigation.

“This was a fluid investigation, and our officers simply followed the evidence,” said Cpl. Mike Kalanj of the Burnaby RCMP.

“While ‘X’ didn’t necessarily mark the spot, ‘Model X’ definitely assisted our officers in identifying the suspect vehicle.”

The investigation remains ongoing.
