After a months-long investigation into a triple homicide in Lloydminster, charges have been laid against a 31-year-old man from Sweetgrass First Nation, Saskatchewan.
The Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit has charged Nakota Rayne Pooyak with three counts of second-degree murder in connection with the deaths of Brent Peters, Matthew Peters, and Brennan Peters.
The victims were found on September 11, 2024, at a residence near 50th St. and 47th Ave. with fatal gunshot wounds.
RCMP officers were initially dispatched to the residence for a well-being check at approximately 5:51 pm.
Upon discovering the three deceased individuals, the Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit took over the investigation with assistance from the Lloydminster RCMP.
Nakota Pooyak was taken into custody and has been remanded following a hearing before a Justice of the Peace. He is scheduled to appear in Saskatchewan Provincial Court on January 20, 2025, in Lloydminster.
Insp. Dean Riou, Officer in Charge of North Operations in the RCMP K Division Serious Crime Branch, emphasized the dedication of law enforcement throughout the investigation.
“Since the beginning of this investigation, we have been committed to uncovering the truth and bringing those responsible to justice. This investigation involved countless hours of meticulous tenacious work, as well as collaboration with other RCMP and municipal police agencies,” said Riou.
This development provides a step toward justice for the victims and their loved ones, though many questions about the case remain.
The RCMP has not disclosed further details regarding the events leading up to the incident or the motive for the killings.
The investigation is ongoing, and police continue to ask anyone with information to come forward.
