Tensions are escalating at political rallies and gatherings across Canada as the federal election looms just one week away on April 28.

A video circulating on social media platform X shows a Liberal supporter in Ottawa allegedly making unwanted physical contact with a conservative demonstrator during a heated exchange on Sunday.

At one point, the Liberal supporter is heard saying, “Go f--- your mother,” according to video. The footage depicts a crowd, some holding signs supporting Liberal Leader Mark Carney, possibly lined up for a Liberal campaign event.

Several conservative protestors are also visible, potentially agitating the group. Ottawa Police Service vehicles are present, aligning with their protocol to ensure safety at demonstrations.

The incident reflects broader frustrations, as polls show 62% of Canadians disapprove of the Liberal government’s fiscal management, citing issues like the carbon tax and housing costs (Ipsos, April 2025).

Many conservatives argue Canada’s survival hinges on electing Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, who has pledged to reverse Liberal economic and social policies they deem detrimental.

Poilievre’s “Canada First” platform, highlighted at a February rally in Ottawa, promises to repeal Bill C-69 — dubbed the “no more pipelines act” — and build a west-to-east pipeline to bolster energy independence, according to CBC News.

Liberals counter that Canada’s future is equally at stake, insisting Carney is uniquely qualified to lead. They point to his experience as Bank of Canada governor during the 2008 financial crisis and his tenure at the Bank of England during Brexit, arguing he can navigate the economic storm triggered by U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs and threats to make Canada a “51st state,” as reported by Reuters on April 16.
