GoFundMe surpasses $83,000 for Prince George family after mother killed in plane emergency landing

PENTICTON — A GoFundMe campaign for the family of a Prince George mother killed in last Thursday’s plane emergency landing has raised more than $83,000 in days..Alex Garneau died the afternoon of August 20 after a Beech King Air 200 aircraft lost power to one engine and made an emergency landing on Foothills Boulevard, colliding with four vehicles. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada said the twin-engine plane, operated by Sekani Air, had departed Sturdee Airstrip northwest of Williston Lake at about 1:25 p.m. bound for Prince George airport with two crew members and six passengers. None of those on board was injured.Garneau, described by friends as a devoted wife, hockey mom and the person who always showed up, leaves behind her husband Jordan and their children Josie and Jackson. A family friend said she was driving with her daughter Josie when the aircraft struck their vehicle; Josie was reported to have walked away largely unharmed.Organizers Laura Creighton of Prince George and Katie Trottier launched the fundraiser to provide practical support for Jordan and the children. Funds will go directly to the family for immediate and long-term needs at their discretion. As of Monday morning the campaign had collected $83,514 toward a $100,000 goal from 568 donations.The GoFundMe page portrays Garneau as the quiet force behind her children’s hockey and activities. “She made the drive. She organized. She cheered. She made things happen,” the organizers wrote. “Her children are both incredible people and hockey players, and she had big dreams for them and the lives they will lead.”.Friends remembered her as someone who made people feel they belonged. “She was the friend who always had your back, the person you knew would show up when you needed her the most,” the campaign states. “She had a way of making people feel like they belonged all while having so much fun. For some of us, she offered something that is difficult to find: family.”“She was fiercely devoted to her family, and she will be forever missed and remembered,” the organizers added. “Let’s take care of Jordan, Josie and Jackson the way Alex took care of so many of us.”The Transportation Safety Board has taken over the investigation. Federal investigators arrived the night of the crash and began examining the scene the next day. Preliminary information remains subject to change, the board cautioned. Ten people were assessed for injuries at the scene; two were taken to hospital in stable condition.The campaign continues to accept donations and asks supporters to share the link, send messages of support or provide meals as the family navigates an unimaginable loss.
