The Shell-led LNG Canada has announced it has produced its first batch of liquified natural gas ready for shipment an unnamed spokesperson told Reuters on Sunday.LNG Canada started producing its first LNG at, "4 am local time," one project source confirmed, while also citing that the facility was only partially operational due to a problem with its first train which will be producing at half-capacity until the issue is resolved. The source also said the gas is being produced by the facility's Train 1, which has a capacity of 5.6 mpta. Former leader of the United Conservative Party (UCP) Erin O'Toole took to X on Monday to proclaim the announcement a, "big deal" and, "great for Canada and for a smart energy transition." .The Kitimat, British Columbia-based liquefaction project is the first of its kind in the country as well as the first in North America with access to the Pacific coast.According to company statements, the facility will have the capacity to export 14 million metric tonnes per annum (mtpa) when fully operational.On June 17, Shell executive Wael Sawan, said the first LNG export cargo was still on track to be shipped by mid-2025.."We take pride in making sure that our customers get an LNG cargo when they need it, because we know how important that is to them," he told the Energy Asia 2025 conference in Kuala Lumpur.Canada currently has two other LNG facilities under construction — Woodfibre LNG and Cedar LNG — which are expected to be completed in 2027 or 2028.
