Liberal MP Harjit Sajjan (Vancouver South) announced on Wednesday that he would not run in the next federal election.

Sajjan has held three cabinet positions under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and has been in the Parliament since 2015.

Sajjan said the growing political toxicity was a key factor in his decision to step away from federal politics.

"Sadly, over the last few years, our political landscape has become increasingly toxic and polarized, with more aggressive rhetoric and even physical threats," said Sajjan, who currently serves as Minister of Emergency Preparedness.

The former Canadian Armed Forces lieutenant-colonel previously served as Minister of National Defence, where he oversaw a doubling of military spending and enhanced Canada's NATO presence in Europe. He later became Minister of International Development before taking on his current role.

During his time representing Vancouver South, Sajjan said he secured federal funding for housing, transit improvements, and a new seniors centre.

"Together, we have proven time and again that when it comes to politics, there is value in having a diversity of voices in prominent roles," said Sajjan, who was one of the first Sikh Canadians to serve in cabinet.

While stepping back from elected office, Sajjan said he will remain active in the Liberal Party and continue advocating for what he called "a more prosperous, equitable, and compassionate Canada."
