While Freedom Convoy organizer Tamara Lich remains in custody, many Canadians are expressing outrage as others who've been charged and convicted of violent crimes walk freely among the public..Naming one case, incensed Lich supporters highlighted on social media last week that a BC man who pled guilty to assaulting a woman in a Vancouver alley the previous year will face no jail time..On the evening of February 13, 2021 a 24-year-old woman was on her way home from shopping on Davie Street. While walking in Maxine Lane, a man grabbed her from behind, causing them both to fall down, said the Vancouver Police Department (VPD). They added that the suspect ran off once the victim began screaming.."Every indication is that this attack was unprovoked, and we believe the victim did not know the suspect," said VPD's Sergeant Addison at the time..After obtaining security footage of the incident, investigators arrested 57-year-old Robert Douglas Ferrey on one count of assault..Ferrey was promptly released on conditions until his first court appearance, after which he was rereleased..Fast forward to June 13, 2022 and Ferrey is sentenced to a conditional discharge and two years probation, said Global News. They added that he would have no criminal record if he met all of his conditions, such as not contacting the victim or possessing weapons..Another BC man was sentenced in March to an eight-month conditional sentence followed by three years probation for possessing child pornography..BC Provincial Court Judge Joanne Challenger said the offender, referred to as "CL," poses no safety risk to the community, and his actions result from "intergenerational trauma," and therefore jail was not necessary..Roughly half of the discovered content in CL's possession showed children either nude or "posed in a sexualized manner," and the other half displayed children being subjected to heinous sexual abuse by adults..Some of the content admittedly possessed and shared by CL includes children subject to "oral, anal, or vaginal sexual penetration by an adult," according to the ruling..CL admitted to collecting such content for six years dating from when he got his first iPad at the age of 21. He then began sharing the content with others..His identity is protected, and CL remains a free man.."He's not jailed because the cell is reserved for Tamara Lich," said one scornful Lich supporter, highlighting that the same day Lich was denied bail (July 8), a man found guilty of raping a woman in his Calgary apartment was granted bail pending his appeal..The comment was a reference to 29-year-old Chad Bobrosky, who was sentenced to 4 1/2 years in prison in June for sexually assaulting a woman in 2018..Judge Good Wong said the assault involved sadism, bondage, and attacks with the intent to injure. Wong further reiterated the harm inflicted was not consensual..Bobrosky appealed the conviction and was subsequently granted bail..Alberta Court of Appeal Justice Barbara Lea Veidhuis said the risk to public safety is "low" if Bobrosky is granted interim release pending the determination of his appeal.."There is nothing in his history to suggest that he would commit a further criminal offence or interfere with the administration of justice if released," said Veidhuis..While Bobrosky's guilt in the eyes of the court is yet to be unequivocally determined, many irate Canadians express disgust that the same generosity is not applied to Lich, who is currently behind bars for "violating the conditions of her release" after meeting with another convoy organizer at a gala..In 1983, now 56-year-old Robin walker was convicted of murder and given an indeterminate life sentence. While on parole for the crime, the Toronto Police Service (TPS) says he was charged and convicted of sexual assault and has remained in prison since that time..On February 7, 2022, walker was again released from prison on day parole and currently resides in a community residential facility in Toronto.
