Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to announce his resignation as early as Monday, according to the Globe and Mail

Trudeau’s decision comes amidst a caucus revolt and horrible polls showing a landslide victory for Pierre Poilievre’s Conservatives.

The Globe’s sources said that they are uncertain about the exact date Trudeau will announce his plans to resign, but they expect it will occur before a national caucus meeting scheduled for Wednesday.

One source pointed out that Trudeau realizes the significance of making an announcement prior to the Liberal caucus meeting on Wednesday to eliminate the perception of being forced out by his own MPs.

Three sources have indicated uncertainty regarding the Liberal Party’s national executive’s plans for replacing Trudeau as leader.

It is still uncertain whether he will depart immediately or remain as Prime Minister until a new leader is chosen.

The Liberal Party’s national executive, responsible for making decisions regarding leadership matters, is scheduled to meet later this week.

Despite Trudeau resigning as leader, several MPs have expressed the need for an interim leader.

Alberta Liberal George Chahal recently wrote a letter to his caucus colleagues, requesting that they support the need for an interim leader.

The Liberal Party has two options. They appoint an interim leader based on the recommendation of the national caucus or hold a shortened leadership contest.

A leadership contest would require Governor-General Mary Simon to prorogue Parliament at the request of the Prime Minister.

Constitutional experts say it is not guaranteed that the Governor-General would agree to proroguing the Parliament.
