President Donald Trump declared Fridayday that he is ending all trade negotiations with Canada effective immediately. He announced the sudden end via a social media post.Trump blamed Canada's plan to implement a digital services tax (DST) for his decision. He called the tax "a direct and blatant attack on our Country." The DST targets large foreign digital companies, primarily American giants, requiring them to pay tax on revenue earned in Canada."We have just been informed that Canada, a very difficult Country to TRADE with, including the fact that they have charged our Farmers as much as 400% Tariffs, for years, on Dairy Products, has just announced that they are putting a Digital Services Tax on our American Technology Companies, which is a direct and blatant attack on our Country,” said Trump.“They are obviously copying the European Union, which has done the same thing, and is currently under discussion with us, also. Based on this egregious Tax, we are hereby terminating ALL discussions on Trade with Canada, effective immediately. We will let Canada know the Tariff that they will be paying to do business with the United States of America within the next seven day period. Thank you for your attention to this matter!"This move stops trade discussions that had been ongoing for several months. The abrupt end raises immediate concerns about future economic relations between the two neighbours. "The Canadian government will continue to engage in these complex negotiations with the United States in the best interests of Canadian workers and businesses," said the Prime Minister's Office in a statement.."President Trump specifically cited Canada's harmful digital services tax as a reason he's ending trade talks," Franco Terrazzano, federal director of the Canaadian Taxpayers Federation, told the Western Standard."The Canadian government's digital services tax is a bad policy that will make life more expensive for Canadians.""The feds must scrap their digital services tax to make life more affordable for Canadians and to help get a free trade deal with the United States.".Trump tell Canada that "we're gonna stop all negotiations with them until they STRAIGHTEN UP THEIR ACT."
