Four people have been charged with terrorism related offences for an alleged scheme to seize land just outside of Quebec City, including two active members of the Canadian Armed Forces. The RCMP made arrests during coordinated raids in Quebec City, Neuville, and Pont Rouge. All four accused are to appear in a Quebec City courtroom later today. The RCMP identified the suspects as Marc-Aurele Chabot, 24, of Quebec City, Simon Angers-Audet, 24, of Neuville, Raphael Lagace, 25, of Quebec City, and Matthew Forbes, 33, of Pont Rouge. .Chabot, Angers-Audet, and Lagace are accused of taking “concrete steps” to foster an anti-government militia, while Forbes faces weapons and explosives counts. RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Charles Poirier says the investigation, run by Quebec’s Integrated National Security Enforcement Team, began after January 2024 searches uncovered 83 firearms, 16 improvised explosive devices, 11,000 rounds of ammunition, and assorted military gear. Detectives allege the trio took part in shooting drills, ambush training, survival exercises, and land navigation practice, then carried out scouting runs in preparation for “violent extremist” action.RCMP officers also seized prohibited guns, high capacity magazines, and tactical equipment they believe were destined for the planned takeover. .Forbes, who is not a service member, is accused of storing additional firearms, banned devices, and explosives for the group.A Department of National Defence spokesperson says possible disciplinary measures against the two soldiers will be weighed once the criminal proceedings are finished.None of the allegations have been proven in court.
