NDP has picked Vancouver MP Don Davies to lead the party after Jagmeet Singh’s devastating loss on election night and resignation. The party’s federal council confirmed the interim choice on Monday evening, saying Davies will guide the NDP back from an election that left them with just seven seats, five short of official party status in the House of Commons.Singh himself lost Burnaby Central, leaving the party with about 2% of the Commons 343 seats.Davies, 61, has held Vancouver Kingsway since 2008 and kept it by 310 votes, according to Elections Canada..“Our commitment to building a better Canada has never been stronger,” said NDP president Mary Shortall.“With a renewed sense of purpose, we will hold the government to account and keep fighting for the issues we heard about on doorsteps across the country – public healthcare, affordable homes, good jobs, and making the ultra-rich finally pay their fair share.”Attention quickly shifted to Davies past praise for Chinese President Xi Jinping.Toronto MP Kevin Vuong posted on Twitter/X quoting Davies, “President Xi shook hands with us. When shaking hands, I felt the great power emanating from this leader’s body.”.The NDP will set the rules for a permanent leadership race later this year.
