FILDEBRANDT: Liberals say they will steal Canadians' guns to give to Ukraine... thankfully, we know they're lying

It's Groundhog Day in Ottawa again. The Liberals announced that they would seize more firearms from law-abiding gun owners, and they will — thankfully — do nothing to seize said formerly legal guns. Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc said the Liberals would ban 324 "unique makes and models of assault-style firearms" in addition to the more than 1,000 firearms banned earlier in their tenure. These newly banned guns — like the older banned guns — would be seized via a so-called "buy back" program.Hopefully, the Liberals will be as effective in this latest "buy back" program as they were with the last, successfully seizing precisely zero guns from otherwise lawful Canadian gun owners."Buy back" is a curious choice of words since both of them are definitionally a lie. "Buy" implies a consensual transaction of two willing parties. This is one party forcing another to hand over its property at gun point, on pain of prison time. "Back" implies that the government owned these firearms at some point. Unless the government was selling military surplus weapons to civilians, then this is not true either..LeBlanc says that this new "buy back" program will be more successful than the zero guns seized in the last one because Canadians can surrender their firearms at Canada Post now.*clap. *clap. *clap. Let's get lawful gun owners to take their firearms out of their secure locations at home and drop them all off at an undefended, unsecured Canada Post kiosk at the drug store. Criminals will never think to rob it.Thank God that these people are not leading us in wartime.Which brings me to perhaps the most hair-brained part of the latest Liberal gun grab.Defence Minister Bill Blair took to the podium to tell Vladimir Putin that Canada was going to strike fear into the hearts of Russian conscripts by sending Ukraine the guns seized from Canadians.It's almost enough to make you cheer for Russia.I'm sure the Spetsnaz will be terrified when they see a Ukrainian charging at them with my grandfather's old 30-30.These are just not serious people. I doubt the Liberals could hold off an invasion from Denmark for more than a few days, if they think this is serious policy..Canadian Shooting Sports Association President Tony Bernardo summed it up well.“These are not weapons of war. Ukraine wants cruise missiles. They don’t want Canadian sporting arms. This is the stupidest thing I've ever heard. If the guns were weapons of war, they wouldn't have been allowed into Canada.”.Much as the Liberals bandy about the term "military assault-style" guns, it is a made-up term. There is no such thing as a "military assault-style" gun. There are military assault rifles, and there are rifles. Canadians have been strictly prohibited from owning military assault rifles since the 1970s. The only workable definition I can muster for a "military assault-style" rifle is that it's one that looks scary to a Liberal.If I changed out the wooden stock for black carbon fibre and added a few aesthetic bells and whistles, I could make my grandfather's old hunting rifle look scary enough to send a Liberal cabinet minister into a conniption. The Liberals know that Ukraine does not want or need the sporting and hunting rifles of Canadians. The Liberals know that this will not keep anyone safe from guns. It's performative preening..The Liberals know that Canadian gun owners will not submit to this latest attempt to steal their rightful property any more than they submitted the last time they tried.They know all of this, which is why they are not enforcing it until after the next election. They believe this could be a Hail Mary wedge issue to save their bacon from the Conservatives at the ballot box.And, we know the Liberals don't believe seizing these guns will save lives or help Ukraine win its war because if they did, they would do it right now.
