Hundreds of guests, including many Canadians, reported severe illnesses while staying at the Sandos Playacar Resort in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, prompting demands for health investigations.

Between 200 and 700 people, including children and pregnant women, experienced vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration, with some wedding groups saying nearly all attendees fell "sick."

Guests and a local doctor suspect contaminated food or water caused the outbreak.

Some individuals tested positive for Entamoeba histolytica, a parasite spread through fecal matter in water.

The resort has suggested seasonal gastrointestinal illness in the region may be a factor.

Sandos Playacar temporarily closed its buffet and increased cleaning efforts, stating it sanitized water systems and kitchens while co-operating with health officials.

However, many guests criticized slow medical responses and shortages of supplies like IV fluids, describing the situation as a “nightmare.”

Several required hospital care, including children and elderly visitors.
