Mark Carney to kick off Liberal leadership run in Edmonton on Thursday

Mark Carney is expected to launch his bid for the federal Liberal leadership in his hometown on Thursday.

CTV News Edmonton spoke with two sources who confirmed that Carney would enter the Liberal leadership race in Edmonton. 

Before returning to Canada, Carney was the governor of the Bank of England.

Carney aims to replace Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who announced last week that he will resign after the Liberal leadership race picks their next leader.

Seven prospective candidates have posted forms on the Liberal Party’s website to collect the 300 signatures required to enter the race, with at least 100 signatures from three provinces or territories before the January 23 deadline. 

Former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, former B.C. premier Christy Clark, cabinet ministers Karina Gould and Jonathan Wilkinson, Chandra Arya MP, and former MP Frank Baylis have all said they are interested in becoming the Liberal leader.

Carney was born in Fort Smith, NWT, and relocated with his family to Edmonton when he was a young boy, where he attended St. Francis Xavier High School. 

Carney studied at Harvard University and the University of Oxford, where he met his wife.

Bob Carney, his father, finished second in the Edmonton-South electoral district during the 1980 general election for the Liberal Party. 

The Liberal leadership vote is March 9.
