Dan McTeague was first elected to Parliament in the 1993 federal election, and was re-elected in 1997, 2000, 2004, 2006 and 2008, as a member of the Liberal Party of Canada.

He served as the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs until 2006 and also as vice-chair of the Standing Committee on Industry. One of his earlier legislative achievements was getting a bill passed that made fleeing a peace officer using a vehicle unlawful, now Section 249.1 of the Criminal Code of Canada.

In 2019, he became president of Canadians for Affordable Energy.

Despite being a member of the Liberal Party, McTeague harshly criticized the party under the leadership of Justin Trudeau, arguing in 2024 that the Liberals were no longer a centrist party. He also criticized the party’s implementation of the carbon tax; it’s spending policies during COVID-19 and; its national resource policies.

He recently said Canadians should be very afraid of Liberal Party leader Mark Carney.
