Kyle Kemper, half-brother of former prime minister Justin Trudeau, is warning Canadians that Liberal Leader Mark Carney would push for a national central bank digital currency (CBDC).
In a video shared on Twitter/X on Wednesday, Kemper brands Carney “the CBDC candidate” and claims the former central banker is acting for elite groups such as the Bilderberg Group and World Economic Forum.
Kemper tells viewers a digital loonie would be “fully tracked, fully centralized” and could reward citizens for obedience while punishing dissent.
“People don’t understand how dangerous a CBDC is,” said Kemper.
Kemper pointed out that President Donald Trump recently signed an executive order banning an American CBDC and argues Canada should do the same.
Kemper has been warning Canada about Carney, including telling the Western Standard that Carney’s policies are the exact opposite of what Canada needs, particularly Carney’s economic policies.
Carney, sworn in as Liberal leader last month, has not responded publicly to Kemper’s remarks.
On the campaign trail this week, Carney emphasized the need for a modern payments system but has stopped short of committing to a timeline for any digital dollar.
Central bank digital currencies are being tested or studied in more than 100 countries, including China and the European Union.
The Bank of Canada continues internal research but says no decision will be made without public consultation and parliamentary approval.
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has promised to block a CBDC if his party wins the federal election, saying it would give Ottawa too much control over personal finances.
The CBDC issue adds a crypto controversy to an already volatile campaign defined by trade tensions and energy security.
