Location: Edmonton, AB (On-site at the Legislative Assembly)
The Western Standard is seeking a skilled, experienced reporter to lead our coverage of the Alberta Legislature. This is a high-profile position based directly at the Legislative Assembly in Edmonton, covering daily developments, political movements, and policy issues shaping the province.
About the Role:
You’ll be our eyes and ears on the ground at the Legislature, attending press conferences, breaking stories, and producing sharp, timely political reporting for our audience across Alberta and beyond.
What You’ll Do:
Write frequent, accurate, and compelling political news stories with quick turnaround
Attend press conferences, scrums, and government events to provide detailed and relevant reporting
Use FOI tools and original investigative methods to uncover impactful stories
Support editorial coordination with opinion columnists and broadcast contributors
Collaborate with the News Editor to set editorial direction and maintain high standards
Help lead the Edmonton bureau’s strategic goals and coverage priorities
Maintain a professional presence on social media
Uphold the Western Standard’s editorial principles and company values
What We’re Looking For:
5–8 years of journalism or political reporting experience preferred
A strong portfolio of published political coverage
Excellent writing, research, and communication skills
Deep understanding of Alberta politics and government operations
A journalism or communications degree is an asset but not required
Highly self-motivated and comfortable working independently in a fast-paced environment
