Based in Calgary, this director-level role is ideal for a seasoned editor who thrives in a fast-paced, ideas-driven environment and understands how to shape compelling commentary that aligns with our mission and values.
The ideal candidate has a deep understanding of journalism and media, is confident leading a team of writers and contributors, and is passionate about producing high-quality, thought-provoking content. You’ll be responsible for the vision, quality, and operations of our Opinion Department—ensuring all content is on brand, engaging, and aligned with our editorial standards.
Responsibilities include:
Oversee the strategic and day-to-day operations of the Opinion Department
Edit and review content to ensure quality, clarity, and alignment with our Style Guide and Editorial Principles
Mentor and manage staff writers, freelancers, and contributors
Recruit and develop new talent to strengthen the department
Monitor and analyze performance metrics and contribute to content planning based on real-time and monthly data
Collaborate with the Chief Editor to align department goals with the broader Strategic Plan
Work cross-functionally with Operations to fulfill contractual editorial deliverables
Uphold and enforce the Western Standard’s values, voice, and standards across all opinion content
You’re a good fit if you:
Bring 8–10 years of experience in journalism, editorial leadership, or publishing
Hold a bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or a related field
Have excellent editing, writing, and analytical skills
Are a decisive, motivated leader who can rally a team around editorial and strategic goals
Understand the intersection of journalism and business and can balance editorial integrity with audience growth
Are familiar with the Western Standard and believe in its mission to build a strong, independent Western Canadian media voice
This is a full-time, in-office position based in Calgary.
