The US Department of Justice asked a federal New York judge to dismiss the last remaining indictment against Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou, says Reuters..Prosecutors say Meng abided by the terms of her prosecution agreement made last year for the charges against her to be axed December 1, four years after she’d been arrested in Vancouver..Meng faced multiple accusations, such as stealing secrets and using Hong Kong communications firm Skycom to sell tech equipment to Iran, in violation of US sanctions..Following her detention in Vancouver was the arrest of Canada’s Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor in China. Known as the two Michaels, Kovrig and Spavor were charged under the State Secrets Law in what is widely considered to be an act of retaliation to Meng’s arrest, however China has denied any link..Meng struck the deal on Sept. 24, 2021, flying to China that day. The two Michaels were then released and two American siblings who’d been prevented from leaving China were allowed to return home..Huawei is still charged in the case, which includes bank fraud, obstructing justice, and more. It has pleaded not guilty and no trial dates have been set down. A status conference is scheduled for February 7..“The government respectfully moves to dismiss the third superseding indictment in this case as to defendant Wanzhou Meng," Brooklyn US attorney Carolyn Pokorny wrote in a Thursday letter to US District judge Ann Donnelly..Meng, the daughter of Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei, now serves as the company's rotating chairwoman, deputy chairwoman, and chief financial officer.
