A Canadian citizen and US permanent resident has died in Florida while in US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody, according to the government agency.Johnny Noviello, a 49-year-old citizen of Canada in the custody of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, was pronounced deceased by the Miami Fire Rescue Department on June 23, the agency said in a statement on Wednesday. The cause of death is still under investigation. Noviello was being detained at the Federal Detention Center in Miami when he was found unresponsive in his cell on Monday.He was attended to by medical staff who began administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation, automated external defibrillator shock and called 911. .Noviello was pronounced dead later that day at 1:36 pm, less than an hour after he was found at 12:54 pm, ICE said. The agency added, “comprehensive medical care is provided from the moment individuals arrive and throughout the entirety of their stay.”Official records show Noviello entered the United States Jan. 2, 1988, in a legal visa status. He became a lawful permanent resident Oct. 24, 1991. According to ICE, Noviello was convicted on Oct. 12, 2023, in Volusia County on multiple drug trafficking charges and sentenced to 12 months in prison..In February of this year, a judge granted Noviello’s request to convert the remainder of his two-year supervised community control sentence to probation.On May 15, 2025, he was again arrested by ICE at the Florida Department of Corrections probation office and charged with removability due to his prior conviction.
