FBI reports New Orleans terrorist attacker had explosives transmitter
A man who allegedly killed 14 people by driving a pickup truck through crowds on Bourbon Street in New Orleans on New Year's Day had planned to set off explosives, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
Shamsud-Din Jabbar, who claimed Islamic State inspiration, had positioned two explosive devices along Bourbon Street, where he later carried out Wednesday morning's attack.
A search of his rental property found bomb making materials and a detonation transmitter.
The explosives failed to detonate when Jabbar was stopped by police after the attack.
Officers found the transmitter and two firearms in his truck.
Authorities determined that Jabbar had driven from Houston on New Year's Eve in the rented truck.
Before the attack, he set fire to his nearby short-term rental house, located about 15 minutes from Bourbon Street.
FBI agents discovered bomb-making materials at the Mandeville Street residence.
According to Alcohol Tobacco Firearm (ATF) investigators, Jabbar was identified as the sole perpetrator who used accelerants to start the fire, attempting to destroy evidence.
The fire, set in a hallway before Jabbar fled, had mostly self-extinguished when firefighters arrived, leaving no exterior damage.
ATF investigators found what they believe to be a homemade rifle suppressor inside the house.
