The widow of late NHL winger Johnny Gaudreau has given birth to their third child, just months after he was killed by a drunk driver.
Meredith Gaudreau announced on social media that she welcomed a baby boy, Carter Michael Gaudreau, on April 1.
She chose Carter’s middle name to honour Johnny, who died at age 31 on August 29 while cycling with his brother Matthew in Oldmans Township, New Jersey.
Meredith said that Carter weighed eight pounds, three ounces, and measured 20.5 inches.
She also shared her excitement to shower the newest Gaudreau with love, vowing to give him “the best life.”
Johnny Gaudreau, often referred to by fans as “Johnny Hockey,” was an American-born forward known for his speed on the ice.
He played 11 NHL seasons, starting his career with the Calgary Flames before signing with the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2022.
The brothers were struck from behind on a highway’s right shoulder by Sean Higgins, 43, who had been drinking and failed a field sobriety test.
Both men were pronounced dead at the scene.
Higgins tried to blame the Gaudreau brothers for the accident because they had also consumed alcohol.
Gaudreau’s untimely passing sent shockwaves through the hockey community, where he was widely admired.
Despite the tragedy, the Gaudreau family now celebrates new life in Carter Michael.
Supporters from across Canada and beyond have sent their condolences and well-wishes, offering hope in the wake of heartbreak.
