A routine traffic stop near Blue Grass Airport turned into a shooting spree on Sunday that left two worshippers and the gunman dead, while wounding three others, including a Kentucky state trooper.Police say the state trooper pulled over a car flagged by a licence plate reader about 11:30 am. The driver Guy House, 47, shot the trooper then carjacked another vehicle and drove nearly 25 kilometres to Richmond Road Baptist Church in Lexington.The trooper radioed for help and is listed in stable condition. He was hit in the leg and underwent surgery Sunday night. According to investigators, no one was hurt during the carjacking..Witnesses say House entered the small church as the service was ending and opened fire.Beverly Gumm and her daughter Christina Combs were killed. Pastor Jerry Gumm and his son in law Randy Combs were wounded.Officers arrived within minutes and confronted House in the parking lot. He refused to drop his weapon and was fatally shot..Phillip Burnett Jr. of the Kentucky State Police said House appeared to be looking for the mother of his three children, who was not at the church. “When he learned she wasn’t there, he said someone was going to die,” Burnett told the media.Court records show House had a history of domestic violence, drug abuse, and mental health troubles.Governor Andy Beshear called the attack “an unspeakable tragedy” and praised first responders for stopping further bloodshed.The killings were the city’s worst mass casualty incident since a 2023 mall shooting.
