The world’s favourite climate rabble-rouser, Greta Thunberg, found herself in hot water on Tuesday after she was hauled away in cuffs at an anti-oil demonstration in London.British bobbies were called out after hundreds of protestors descended on the five-star InterContinental Park Lane hotel, the scene of a three-day gathering of oil and gas executives, politicians and “civil society” groups, according to the BBC.Environmental activists led by Greenpeace and Fossil Free London — and including Thunberg — have dubbed it the ‘Oily Money Conference’, a play on its official title of the Energy Intelligence Forum (EIF).The EIF is to hear from the chief executives of Aramco, Repsol, Shell, TotalEnergies and the Kuwait Petroleum Corporation, among others.Activists blocked both ends of Hamilton Place with banners, pink umbrellas and lit yellow and pink smoke flares. Attendees were reportedly so distraught police wouldn’t allow them into the venue unescorted..“Behind these closed doors at the oil and money conference, spineless politicians are making deals and compromises with lobbyists from destructive industries, the fossil fuel industry.”Greta Thunberg.A statement by the Metropolitan police on social media said there had been “interventions by officers to enable members of the public safe access in and out of the venue.” Six people — including Thunberg — were arrested for obstruction, a further 14 for breaching conditions on the protest imposed under the Public Order Act and one for causing "criminal damage."Cell cam footage showed the Swedish teen activist being bundled into the back of a police lorry and hauled away for blocking one of the entrances.Speaking to journalists before joining the protest, Thunberg implored: “Behind these closed doors at the oil and money conference, spineless politicians are making deals and compromises with lobbyists from destructive industries, the fossil fuel industry.”In 2018, the now 20-year-old was catapulted to fame for skipping school every Friday to hold a weekly vigil outside the Swedish Parliament.Thunberg hosted her final climate strike in June as she graduated from school, signing off after 251 consecutive weeks of demonstrations with a warning that “the fight has only just begun.”It comes after Thunberg was arrested and fined in her home country for protesting at Swedish oil port in June where she was convicted and fined 2,500 Swedish kronor, or about CAD$250. She was arrested again at the same port in July and on October 11 was fined another 2,250 kronor.
