Two people were killed on Wednesday morning when two small planes collided in midair near Marana Regional Airport, just outside of Tucson, Arizona.

The Marana Police Department confirmed the fatalities but did not release additional details.

Federal investigators said each aircraft carried two people.

One plane landed safely, while the other crashed near a runway and burst into flames, according to the National Transportation Safety Board.

Officials expect to conduct an on-site investigation once their teams arrive.

This incident marks the latest in a string of serious accidents across North America.

Last week in Arizona, a private jet owned by Mötley Crüe singer Vince Neil veered off a runway in Scottsdale, killing one pilot.

Meanwhile, recent crashes in Toronto, Alaska, and two major incidents in the continental United States have claimed dozens of lives and caused significant property damage.

Marana Regional Airport does not operate an air traffic control tower, though plans for a new tower are underway.

Construction has been delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, but officials say the multimillion-dollar project remains a priority.

Tens of thousands of flights arrive and depart from the airport every year, making safety oversight a growing concern for local authorities.
