Pembina Valley RCMP is asking the public to help identify two people seen on surveillance video during a suspicious fire that destroyed a Carman church in March.

The blaze broke out around 4:15 am on March 13 at Grace-St. John’s Anglican/Lutheran Church on Second St.

Firefighters arriving minutes later found the floor collapsed into the basement, forcing crews to battle flames from outside until hotspots were contained by 6 a.m.

Roughly 75% of the building’s interior was damaged, though no injuries were reported.

RCMP released grainy images on Monday of two individuals seen near the church around 4:05 am.

“The fire’s cause remains under investigation, but we’re treating it as suspicious,” said the RCMP in a statement, pointing out that the RCMP is working in collaboration with Manitoba’s Office of the Fire Commissioner.

Deputy Carman Fire Chief Joey McElroy said crews prioritized preventing the fire from spreading to nearby structures once the floor gave way.

Police stress the persons of interest may have information critical to the case.

The 129-year-old church, a community landmark, hosted its final service in 2023 due to declining attendance. Its future was under discussion before the fire.

No charges have been laid. The investigation continues.

Investigators urge anyone with video footage from 3:30 am to 4:30 am to contact Pembina Valley RCMP at (204)745-6760.

Tips can also be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers.
