A Winnipeg man is in custody facing terrorism and hate crime charges following two investigations by the RCMP and Winnipeg Police Service (WPS).
Nevin Thunder Young, 19, was arrested on Tuesday by the RCMP’s National Security Enforcement Section (NSES) and charged with facilitating terrorist activity, participating in a terrorist group, and twice committing offences for a terrorist group.
He remains in custody at the Winnipeg Remand Centre and is set to appear in provincial court today.
The charges follow a referral from WPS, who began investigating a series of anti-Semitic graffiti incidents between September and December 2024.
Swastikas and hate symbols were spray-painted on buildings, fences, and objects in Charleswood.
WPS officers reviewed security footage, interviewed victims, and identified a suspect.
On January 12, WPS raided a Westdale home and arrested Young on 26 counts of mischief under $5,000.
Those charges relate to the graffiti spree.
Investigators later flagged potential terrorism ties, prompting the RCMP’s NSES to take over part of the case.
“Hate crimes have devastating impacts on communities,” said WPS in a statement, adding their hate crimes unit continues investigating.
The RCMP emphasized collaboration between agencies to address “serious threats to public safety.”
Young has not entered pleas in the charges against him.
