The Alberta government has announced leadership changes as part of its ongoing efforts to transform the health care system, including the creation of a new acute care agency, Acute Care Alberta.

The agency, which will oversee hospitals, emergency services, and surgical care, aims to improve access, reduce wait times, and enhance patient experiences across the province.

Dr. Chris Eagle, former president and CEO of Alberta Health Services (AHS) from 2010 to 2013, has been named chair and interim president and CEO of Acute Care Alberta.

His appointment, pending contract finalization, will take effect February 1 to align with the agency’s establishment as a legal entity.

“Acute care is the most complex part of the health care system, and it’s critical that we have the right leadership in place to see this work through and make positive changes to the health care system for Albertans now and into the future,” said Adriana LaGrange, Minister of Health.

Eagle will prepare the organization for operations later this spring and lead the shift toward a more streamlined and efficient acute care system.

“I am excited to take on this role and support the efforts to refocus Alberta’s health care system,” he said. “We will create an improved acute care system that makes sure Albertans have access to the best health care services they need, no matter where they live in the province.”

To oversee AHS’s transition from a regional health authority to a hospital-focused service provider, Andre Tremblay, deputy minister of Alberta Health, has been appointed interim president and CEO of AHS.

Tremblay brings more than 20 years of public service experience, including leadership roles in health, education, and transportation. He will retain his deputy minister salary during this interim period.

“We are at a critical time in the work that is underway to refocus the health care system,” Tremblay said. “I look forward to leading AHS as it transitions to a service delivery provider and engaging with front-line workers and staff across the system in the coming months.”

The AHS board will soon begin the search for a permanent president and CEO. In the meantime, acute care services will remain unaffected, ensuring continued access for Albertans while the transition progresses.
