A projected Liberal government under Mark Carney likely sparked dismay in rural and some parts of urban Alberta Monday night, with a recent poll suggesting 30% of Albertans considered sovereignty if the Liberals won the federal election.

As of 10:30 p.m., Alberta’s federal electoral map was predominantly Conservative blue. Conservative Michelle Rempel Garner was the first in the province declared elected.

Also in Calgary, Liberal MP George Chahal trailed Conservative Dalwinder Gill, while Liberal Lindsay Luhnau trailed in Calgary Centre against Conservative incumbent Greg McLean. Liberal candidate Corey Hogan was behind Conservative incumbent Jeremy Nixon in Calgary Confederation.

In Edmonton Southeast, Mayor Amarjeet Sohi lost to Conservative Jagsharan Singh Mahal. In Edmonton Centre, Conservative Sayid Ahmed trailed Liberal Eleanor Olszewski in the riding formerly held by Liberal MP Randy Boissonnault.

In Edmonton Griesbach, Conservative Kerry Diotte won over NDP incumbent Blake Desjarlais. In Edmonton Strathcona, NDP MP Heather McPherson held a significant lead over Conservative Miles Berry. In Edmonton Gateway, Conservative incumbent Tim Uppal held a wide lead over the closest competitor.
