In response to growing global uncertainty and its impact on local livelihoods, the Alberta government has launched a new “Buy Local” campaign aimed at supporting the province’s farmers, ranchers, and food processors.
Announced April 14, the initiative urges Albertans to show their provincial pride by choosing locally made food and beverages whenever possible.
Whether shopping for groceries or dining out, consumers are being encouraged to eat, drink, and buy Alberta products to help sustain the province’s vital agriculture and food sectors.
“It’s time to let these hard-working Albertans know we have their back,” said RJ Sigurdson, Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation.
“Now, more than ever, we need to shop local and buy made-in-Alberta products. The next time you are grocery shopping or go out for dinner or a drink with your friends or family, support local to demonstrate your Alberta pride.”
Sigurdson noted that the agriculture industry is currently not impacted by tariffs, and the government will continue to advocate for the sector.
To help consumers identify local products more easily, Alberta’s government is promoting tools and resources that highlight Alberta- and Canadian-made foods. The campaign emphasizes that buying local not only supports producers but also keeps more of Albertans' hard-earned dollars within the province.
Alberta boasts a rich variety of fresh, locally produced goods, from vegetables and honey to frozen foods, craft beer, and world-renowned beef.
This summer, Albertans will have the chance to support local directly at more than 150 farmers’ markets across the province, meeting the people who grow, bake, and make the food they enjoy.
The campaign builds on the success of the “Made in Alberta” voluntary food and beverage labelling program, launched in March 2023. The label helps raise awareness and makes it easier for shoppers to identify Alberta-made products on store shelves.
