A group of 200 Apple employees called Apple Together issued a public letter against CEO Tim Cook for wanting them to return to a hybrid-work model as being racist..Cook emailed Apple employees, telling them to return to work on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday while continuing to work from home on Wednesday and Friday. .Cook wants them to start by coming back one day a week and ramping up to the three days starting May 23, 2022..Apple Together said that it will make the company “younger, whiter, more male-dominated, more neuro-normative [and] more able-bodied.”.Cook wrote that the move back to the office was motivated by the “need to commune in person.”.Apple Together disagrees and said the company was driven by the “fear of the future of work, fear of worker autonomy [and] fear of losing control.”.By forcing people back to the office, Apple Together wrote the company can “likely always find people will[ing] to work here” but it will “change the makeup” of Apple’s workforce..“It will lead to privileges deciding who can work for Apple, not who’d be the best fit,” wrote Apple Together..“Privileges like being born in the right place so you don’t have to relocate, or being young enough to start a new life in a new city [or] country, or having a stay-at-home spouse who will move with you.”.Apple Together is concerned about gender equality and who does the unpaid work in the home..“Privileges like being born into a gender that society doesn’t expect the majority of care-work from, so it’s easy to disappear into an office all day, without doing your fair share of unpaid work in society.
