The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is continuing its investigation into a fatal RCMP shooting that occurred near Grande Prairie on the Saturday night.According to the agency a community peace officer attempted to pull over a vehicle shortly after 10:30 p.m. The officer observed a second vehicle driving erratically, running a red light and fleeing at high speed. The officer reported the behaviour over a shared radio channel with RCMP.At about 11:05 p.m., a second community peace officer located the suspect vehicle and attempted a traffic stop, but it again sped away. This was also broadcast over the radio.Around 11:26 p.m., an RCMP officer spotted the vehicle near the Grande Prairie detachment. Officers pursued it outside city limits, where it eventually came to a stop in a rural area and the driver exited.Police gave verbal commands, but during the confrontation, the person displayed what appeared to be a firearm. Just after midnight, officers fired their weapons, striking the person.RCMP provided first aid until EMS arrived. The person was declared dead at the scene.ASIRT is now examining the use of force. No further details are being released.ASIRT investigates all incidents involving Alberta police that result in serious injury or death, as well as serious allegations of police misconduct.
