A child is dead and another is in critical condition after a boating collision Saturday evening off the waters of Cates Park.North Vancouver RCMP say they received multiple reports around 6:30 p.m. on June 7 about a speedboat that collided with two children being towed on an inflatable tube by another vessel.Emergency responders rushed to the scene and administered life-saving measures to both children. An 10-year-old boy died at the scene, while the second was airlifted to hospital in critical condition.The operator of the speed boat is now in custody as police continue their investigation. Officers say alcohol and speed may have been factors in the crash.“Officers will work to uncover all available evidence pointing to the cause of this collision,” said Corporal Mansoor Sahak, media relations officer for the North Vancouver RCMP.Police are asking any witnesses who were on the water at the time or anyone who may have recorded the incident on their phone to contact investigators. The file number is 25-11599.RCMP Victim Services is supporting the family of the deceased child.“Our sincerest condolences to the child’s family and friends as they deal with this tragic loss of life,” said Sahak.
