BC Supreme Court announced a class action lawsuit against McKinsey & Company consulting firm. They allege that the the firm was involved in advancing marketing directives to promote the marketing and distribution of opioids in Canada. Since 1996 onwards, both the provincial, territorial, and federal governments have spent billions in healthcare, pharmaceutical, and treatment costs arising from the opioid epidemic, and they are seeking compensation for all the governments involved..The firm allegedly advised on, and had alleged knowledge that, the opioids were addictive and were being promoted to treat conditions in which opioids are not effective. The case will now proceed to trial. This is not the first time McKinsey has been involved in legal proceedings..Back in 2024, the US Justice Department announced the criminal and civil investigation against the firm and charged them $650 million for their involvement with opioid manufacturer Purdue Pharma L.P. They had advised the company to pursue a "turbocharged" sale of OxyContin, back in 2013.
