A BC Highway Patrol officer recently demonstrated that police can stop more than one speeder at a time, impounding two vehicles in a single traffic stop near Chilliwack.

On February 28, about 1:30 p.m., a BC Highway Patrol officer observed two sedans traveling at excessive speeds in the eastbound lane of Hwy. 1 near Popkum Rd.

Using radar and laser speed detection, the officer clocked the vehicles at up to 192 km/h in a 100 km/h zone.

According to Cpl. Michael McLaughlin of BC Highway Patrol, the first driver pulled over immediately, while the second driver had to be convinced via phone to return to the scene after being informed that both he and his vehicle had already been identified.

The drivers, a Surrey man in his personal vehicle and a foreign national operating a rental car, were both issued seven-day vehicle impoundments and tickets for excessive speed. Additionally, they received citations for failing to update their addresses.

“These excessive speeders, who were friends, have learned a valuable lesson,” said McLaughlin.

“Once their cars were towed, BC Highway Patrol gave them a ride to a local Tim Horton’s to think over their life choices. We encourage other drivers to do the same before they make the decision to speed.”
