The BC RCMP has announced the appointment of Chief Superintendent Bruce Singer as the new District Commander for the Island District, effective December 9, 2024. Singer is a seasoned leader with over three decades of service in law enforcement.A third-generation RCMP officer, Singer's career in public service began in the Canadian Armed Forces, where he served from 1988 to 1991. His transition to law enforcement started with the British Columbia Sheriff's Department before joining the RCMP in 2000.Throughout his career, Singer has demonstrated excellence in various policing capacities, including municipal, provincial, and federal investigations. He has led major and serious crimes units, the truth verification section, and the "E" Division interview team, with extensive experience working on Vancouver Island."I'm incredibly honoured to take on this new role as District Commander," Singer said. "Having worked with dedicated island investigators in the past, I have seen firsthand their unwavering commitment to their communities and public safety. I look forward to continuing the strong tradition of collaboration and operational excellence that defines this district."In 2016, Singer was commissioned as an Inspector and served as Investigative Support Services Officer in Newfoundland and Labrador, where he went on to oversee a diverse portfolio that included major crime, forensic identification, and the National Sex Offender Registry. He also served as an emergency response team senior critical incident commander, utilizing his crisis management skills.Upon returning to BC, Singer held senior leadership roles, including being the officer in charge of Occupational Health Services, where he spearheaded initiatives to support RCMP members' mental and physical health. Most recently, he led the Lower Mainland District Integrated Teams, overseeing specialized policing units serving 33 communities."Modern leadership is about empowerment, collaboration, and trust," he said. "By fostering a culture of wellness and inclusivity, we build resilient teams that serve with excellence and inspire others to lead with integrity."Singer expressed gratitude to his predecessor, Chief Superintendent Shawna Baher, for her contributions to the Island District, noting that, "her hard work and people-driven approach have shaped this district into a remarkable team."Recognized for his service, Chief Superintendent Singer holds several accolades, including the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal, the RCMP Long Service Medal, and the Order of Merit of the Police Forces. He is also pursuing an Executive MBA while balancing his role as a dedicated family man and volunteer.
