The BC RCMP has notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia after a person died during an interaction with police in Nakusp.The unidentified suspect was allegedly driving what was believed to be a stolen vehicle when they sped past an officer attempting to make a traffic stop and drove into a ditch.According to the BC RCMP, the incident took place shortly after 3 p.m. on November 25 on Highway 6 just south of town. An officer had located the vehicle and tried to initiate a traffic stop, but the driver "reportedly accelerated before driving off the road."The RCMP noted that Emergency Health Services arrived on scene a short time later, but that the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The sole passenger survived, and was taken to hospital for treatment. They have since been released.The IIO will now investigate the actions of the police, however until their work is done, no further information will be released.
