BC United has called on supporters for donations, warning that its existence as a political party hinges on their financial contributions. In an email, BC United explained that leader Kevin Falcon's decision to suspend the campaign and join forces with the BC Conservatives had a major financial impact on the party. Having won no seats, they did not receive any per-vote subsidies, which totalled $1.5 million last year, nor the 50% election expense reimbursements given to other parties."BC United's Board of Directors and a small, dedicated team have been, and continue to work tirelessly to fulfill BC United's commitments, including settling outstanding liabilities," the email continued. "Meeting these obligations is not just about compliance with Elections BC — it is about doing the right thing."The party went on to note that it needed to "raise hundreds of thousands of dollars in the coming weeks to ensure the party remains registered so that the membership will have the opportunity to decide what is next.""There is no alternative," the email warned. "Either we raise the funds required to meet our commitments, or BC United will be unable to continue."The party asked supporters to donate the maximum amount, $1,450, pointing out that contributions would come with a tax credit of up to $900."Your donation today will make a critical difference in the political landscape in British Columbia," the email concluded. "Every dollar brings us closer to meeting our financial obligations and ensuring that BC United's members retain the ability to decide the party's future."Just how many people heed their calls remains to be seen.
