Two Ontario men have been charged in connection with the alleged misappropriation of approximately $200,000 from the Calgary & District Cricket League (C&DCL), police announced Wednesday.

An internal investigation launched in 2017 by the league’s newly appointed president uncovered financial discrepancies, prompting a police probe into the organization’s records.

Authorities determined that between January 2014 and December 2016, the league’s former treasurer and former president funneled funds to construction businesses and contractors linked to themselves or their immediate family members.

The payments were supposedly for repairs and upgrades to the C&DCL clubhouse and grounds at Riley Park. However, police say the work was either never completed or done using substandard materials, with highly inflated costs.

Following a multi-jurisdictional investigation that required production orders and warrants, police charged Salman Khan Shahzad, 46, and Syed Wajahat Ali, 45, both of Milton, Ont., with fraud over $5,000 and theft over $5,000.

The two are scheduled to appear in court on Thursday, March 13, 2025.
