BANFF — Prime Minister Mark Carney, in an attempt to “use maximum pressure against Russia,” has pledged $2 billion in spending, and an additional $2 billion in frozen Russian assets.Carney also promised President Volodymyr Zelensky sanctions “against a number of individuals in Russia,” sanctions against over 40 entities “in Russia and beyond that are trying to contribute to the evasion of these sanctions,” and “the sanctioning of over 200 vessels in the shadow fleet that Russia is using to evade these sanctions.”“The support will be unwavering until we get justice and peace for the Ukrainian people,” said Carney at a press conference following a meeting with the Ukrainian president Tuesday morning at the G7 in Kananaskis.Canada, since the Russia-Ukraine war began in 2022, has committed nearly $20 billion in total aid — the highest per capita among G7 countries. Spending includes $4.5 billion in military aid and $15 billion in financial, humanitarian and development assistance, per Global Affairs Canada..“Maximum pressure includes financial pressure,” said Carney.Zelensky, speaking at the press conference, thanked Carney and described an overnight Monday attack on his country that was “one of the biggest attacks from the very beginning of this war.”“Our families had a very difficult night,” he said.“It was a big attack on infrastructure, people, houses, etc. For now, we have 138 injured people and 12 killed.”“It's a big tragedy for us, and we need support from our allies. I’m here to thank you for the military package. It's important for our soldiers to be strong on the battlefield, to stay strong until Russia is ready for peace negotiations.”“We are ready for the peace negotiations, an unconditional ceasefire. I think it's very important. But for this we need pressure.”
