Edmonton Mayor Amarjeet Sohi, who has served since 2021, plans to leave his municipal role to run as a Liberal Party of Canada candidate under Prime Minister Mark Carney in the upcoming federal election.
The move marks a return to federal politics for Sohi, who represented Edmonton Mill Woods as an MP from 2015 to 2019. During that time, he held cabinet positions as Minister of Infrastructure and Communities and Minister of Natural Resources under then-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Sohi announced his candidacy on Thursday, aligning with Carney’s visit to Edmonton. As mayor, Sohi prioritized economic recovery, social equity, and climate initiatives during his tenure.
His departure from the mayor’s office could trigger a byelection in Edmonton.
Sohi shared his decision alongside Carney at a press conference focused on housing initiatives. He highlighted his motivation to tackle national issues like housing and economic recovery.
“I’ve seen what we can achieve locally, and I believe I can contribute to Edmonton and Canada on a larger stage with Mark Carney’s team,” said Sohi.
Speculation about Sohi’s political future has swirled recently, with some Edmontonians and commentators questioning the timing of his exit amid the city’s ongoing economic and social challenges.
Carney lauded Sohi’s experience, describing him as “a proven leader who understands Alberta’s needs.”
However, the announcement has drawn mixed reactions. Critics on platforms like X have called it a return to Trudeau’s old guard, referencing Sohi’s ties to the previous Liberal administration.
