An Edmonton high school teacher has been charged with multiple child sexual exploitation offences and is believed to have left the country to avoid arrest.Jimmy Buena, a teacher at St. Oscar Romero Catholic High School, was charged on June 24 with making, accessing, possessing and transmitting child pornography, according to Alberta’s Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) unit. Officers attempted to arrest Buena at the school the same day but were unable to locate him..A warrant has been issued for his arrest. ICE said the charges stem from online activity and that it is not yet known if any students were directly affected. The unit is sharing information publicly due to the suspect’s position of trust and authority, and urged anyone with relevant details to contact local police or Crime Stoppers. The investigation began after the RCMP’s National Child Exploitation Crime Centre tipped off ICE officers that Buena had allegedly uploaded child sexual abuse material through Facebook. The investigation remains ongoing. ALERT, the agency overseeing ICE, is funded by the Alberta government and brings together specialized law enforcement teams to target serious and organized crime.
