Emily Lowan has been elected leader of the BC Green Party.She won on the first ballot, with 3,189 of the 8,641 votes..When the results were announced, chants of "Emily, Emily, Emily" filled the room at the Parkside Hotel in Victoria.She then walked on stage and wasted no time getting down to business..Lowan began by thanking those who made her win possible, giving a special shoutout to the hundreds of new members who signed up over the past few months. "You all definitely put the 'party' back in the Green Party," she quipped.Lowan went on to note that the party saw a tenfold increase in youth membership, describing it as "a force to reckon with.".While discussing the numbers, Lowan took a jab at the BC Conservatives, noting that the BC Greens "now have more active members than the official opposition.".While the BC Greens have always been critical of billionaires, Lowan vowed to turn words into action."We can unmask the greed of the billionaire class and all the ways the exploit and harm others to grow their personal wealth," she proclaimed. "We can build a plan to take back the public wealth that has been looted with real taxation on the ultra-wealthy and the biggest corporations to pay for our climate and affordability agenda."Lowan said she plans to run for office and become an MLA, but did not specify a timeline or which riding she'd consider representing.
