Chrystia Freeland has announced her resignation as finance minister.
Freeland released her resignation letter Monday morning, the day she was scheduled to present the Fall Economic Update and annual financial reports.
The economic update is now on hold as the Liberal caucus scrambles to recalibrate. Toronto Sun political columnist Brian Lilley said the Liberals' deficit has climbed to $61.9 billion.
In her letter, she told Prime Minister Justin Trudeau she was stepping down because he told her he no longer wanted her in the role. She further noted for the last several weeks, she and Trudeau have found themselves “at odds by the best path forward for Canada.”
“On Friday, you told me you no longer want me to serve as your finance minister, and offered me another position in the cabinet,” wrote Freeland.
“Upon reflection, I have concluded that the only honest and viable path is for me to resign from the cabinet.”
“To be effective, a Minister must speak on behalf of the prime minister and with his full confidence in making your decision. You made clear, I no longer credibly enjoy that confidence and possess the authority that comes with it.
This is a developing story. More to come...
