Jagmeet Singh has announced that he will be stepping down as leader of the NDP.

The move comes following the loss of his seat in Burnaby Central.

Singh has been the head of the party since 2017.

"Almost eight years ago, I was elected leader of this incredible party and this incredible movement," Singh began. "I worked really hard to be worthy of this trust, to live up to the legacy of our movement.

He went on to note that he would be stepping down as party leader "as soon as an interim leader can be appointed."

After thanking his wife, Singh turned his attention to his NDP team.

"We brought historic change for people," he said. "We brought real change to the lives of Canadians. I know that people are concretely better off because of our work over the last 8 years, and no election result will ever diminish that."

Current projections show the NDP winning just seven seats across the country, five shy of maintaining official party status.
