Prince Edward Island Premier Dennis King on Thursday announced his intention to resign as Progressive Conservative leader on Friday at 9 a.m. MT.

King, 53, has been premier since 2019, and was re-elected for his second mandate in 2023. He confirmed he is in good health, and said his resignation is the best thing for his family and his constituents.

A new party leader, who will by default become the new premier of PEI, will be selected “in the hours ahead,” he said.

"There have been more positives than negatives over the years," said King at a press conference.

"As your premier, I have tried to be honest, upfront and sincere, and I've tries my very best to connect directly with islanders, rather than just talk to you."

"This might be shocking news to some today, I have repeatedly said time and against that I would not be a lifer in this job."
