Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to address Canadians with an announcement about his future Monday morning at 8:45 a.m. MST.

Trudeau over the last several weeks has been under immense pressure from his Liberal caucus to resign. The prime minister, however, in a recent Liberal campaign video and speaking to This Hour Has 22 Minutes, has alluded that he has no intention of stepping down.

Trudeau is scheduled to attend a six-hour Liberal caucus meeting with MPs strongly encouraged to attend in person.

Trudeau’s anticipated announcement, reported by the National Post, appears to be a result of his time of “reflection” over the holidays — but it has not been confirmed the announcement will be about his resignation.

The Liberal Party at the end of December polled at 16%, while support for the Conservatives soared to 45%, according to Angus Reid.

Should Trudeau resign, it would trigger a Liberal leadership race, while the party scrambles to organize for the October 2025 election. Jagmeet Singh’s NDP could trigger an election earlier, should they vote with the Conservatives and the Bloc Quebecois in a non-confidence vote in the current Liberal minority government.
