Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Monday morning said President Donald Trump will pause the proposed 25% tariffs for one month.
Trump shortly after confirmed the one-month pause, describing a "very friendly conversation" with his Mexican counterpart.
Trump has threatened Canada and Mexico with 25% tariffs due to “porous borders” that facilitate rampant drug trafficking and illegal immigrants crossing into the US.
Sheinbaum in a statement posted to social media pledged to ramp up security at its northern border, and acknowledged the White House’s decision to delay the tariffs for a month.
“They are pausing tariffs for one month from now,” she wrote.
“We had a good conversation with President Trump with great respect for our relationship and sovereignty; we reached a series of agreements,” wrote Sheinbaum, listing three areas where the nation will improve its border.
“1. Mexico will immediately reinforce the northern border with 10,000 members of the National Guard to prevent drug trafficking from Mexico to the United States, particularly fentanyl.”
“2. The United States is committed to working to prevent the trafficking of high-powered weapons to Mexico.”
“3. Our teams will begin working today on two fronts: security and trade.
