Donald Trump has made it clear that he still intends on imposing tariffs on Canada.
The president said the economic attack was "on schedule" as the one-month extension he gave his neighbours to the north approaches expiration.
"We're on time with the tariffs, and it seems like that's moving along very rapidly," Trump said during a press conference alongside French president Emmanuel Macron on Monday.. "We've been mistreated very badly by many countries, not just Canada and Mexico. We've been taken advantage of."
He reiterated that the tariffs are "going forward on time, on schedule."
The president went on to admit that his motivation was righting what he deemed to be wrong moves by past administrations.
"I'm not even blaming these other countries," he said. "I'm blaming our leadership for allowing it to happen. Who can blame them if they made these great deals with the United States, took advantage of the United States on manufacturing, on just about everything."
Canada and Mexico could face 25% tariffs as early as March 4, however lawmakers from north of the 49th are in Washington, DC this week doing all they can to ensure that doesn't happen.
