United Conservative Party (UCP) MLA Jason Stephan, representing Red Deer-South, announced Monday his desire for a referendum on Alberta’s independence, highlighting growing frustrations with federal policies.

Speaking to media, Stephan, a tax lawyer and chartered accountant, did not disclose how he would vote in such a referendum, according to CityNews.

The University of Calgary law gold medalist, who founded CA Tax Law and the Red Deer Taxpayers’ Association, has served as MLA since 2019.

He has advocated for Alberta’s economic autonomy while criticizing federal overreach.

Stephan’s call comes on the heels of the UCP’s introduction of Bill 54, which aims to streamline the process for citizens to initiate a successful independence referendum.

The proposal also follows the recent federal election victory of Liberal Prime Minister Mark Carney, which has fueled concerns among many Albertans about the province’s marginalization within Confederation.

Stephan’s comments signal a deepening divide between Alberta and Ottawa, as the province grapples with its role in Canada’s federation.
